Flying tips (back to top)
Collision avoidance
External site - The Air National Guard's collision avoidance compendium running over Google maps.  It needs a wide screen, or horizontal scroll bars appear.  I wish web sites wouldn't do that!  The site is processor intensive.  (This means slow on older systems like mine.)
Special Use airspace
External site - The FAA's web page depicting special use airspace.  According to the FAA, it "may not be complete".  Go figure.
Use of flight simulators
Dave McCormick on flight simulators and proficiency.
MSFS 2004 add-ons
How to add the Archer to MS Flight Simulator 2004.
Angel Flight Dave McCormick on being an Angel Flight pilot and volunteering to fly people needing medical care and support.
New!  2009 AOPA seminar notes
Gary Baluha's notes from the 2009 AOPA Summit:
Night Flying Safety  ||  How To Pass Any Checkride  ||  Tips From Controllers
90K Word document
2008 AOPA seminar notes
Gary Baluha's notes from the following 2008 AOPA seminars:
Surviving After a Forced Landing  ||  Single-Pilot IFR  ||  Stall/Spin Awareness  ||  The PARE spin recovery procedure  ||  Single Pilot Flying Strategies (Rod Machado) ||  Managing Your Engine for Peak Performance
76K Word document
Pinch Hitter flight guide
1.9 MB Word 97 document by Jose Helu.  It is an early version of the flight guide given to our pinch hitters, and goes over the basics of pinch hitter piloting.
Intercept procedures
Important to know!
Danbury Airport diagram An old (but useful) airport diagram showing Reliant's location, and other points of interest on the airport.  It's a large image on the screen, though the image is a smallish (75K) .gif file.
See How It Flies
External site - John S. Denker's excellent (html) book on how airplanes behave, and why they behave that way.
VOR demo External site - A Java applet for visualizing radio navigation.  It shows two user-selectable instruments (VOR, HSI, ADF, etc) along with a map view with an airplane you can navigate.  Programmable wind too.  Takes some time to load.
Water-finding paste
External site - I came across this in the "over the airwaves" Dec 31, 2006 issue (see next section, below).  It looks interesting, but I've never tried it so cannot comment.

Other useful external aviation sites (no warranties expressed or implied!) (back to top)
Airnav.com
Fuel prices and fees, airport and FBO information.
100LL.com
Fuel prices and fees, airport and FBO information.
New!   Wikipedia for Flying20
A new wikipedia created by Gary Baluha about the Flying20 club.
aviawiki.com
This is a new wiki for aviation destinations.  Being a wiki, you can edit it yourself to add or modify entries.  It's fairly new, so there's not much there yet, but feel free to add to it, making it a valuable resource for all of us.
fltplan.com
This site has (among many other things) preferred routes that you might expect should be in the AF/D but are not.  Also has weather fuel prices, flight tracking, and charts. I found out about this at a recent FAA safety seminar.  Some services may require (free) registration
NACO free digital products
Free digital approach plates and other charts.  Now includes the AF/D!  Click on home for more.
Myairplane.com's approach plates
Free digital approach plates, IFR and VFR charts at this link.  Click on home for much more.
Passur.com radar monitoring
"almost live" and historical radar for several airports.
aviation toolbox.org
Free downloadable digital sectionals.  Huge files.  Georeferenced too.
flightaware.com
Beta site (testing phase). Track any IFR or commercial flight.  Historical info too.
mypilotstore.com
Paper sectionals and other charts at a discount, with free shipping!   Other pilot stuff too.
NACO charts
Paper charts and such from the source.  No discount on charts, but the AF/D is discounted with free shipping if you buy the subscription.  NACO has free digital charts too; see link higher up in this list.
liveatc.net Live ATC radio feeds and archives.
overtheairwaves.com
Aviation newsletter suggested by Jerry Pozniak and Bob Miller
landings.com
Many things, including flight planning (click on "flight planning" near the top right and then "flight planning" on the resulting page; get terrain avoidance graphs among other things)
skyvector.com Digital sectionals you can zoom and drag in your browser window.  Faster but less capable than runwayfinder.com, below.
runwayfinder.com Digital sectionals stitched together properly, apparantly running as a google maps application.  You can zoom and drag just like google maps, and also chart course lines (it plots something close to the great circle route).  You can also overlay google street maps and sattelite photos, and it shows TFR boundaries.  Mongo cool!  Note - sectionals are not quite current.
adventurepilot.com
Searachable listings of $100 hamburger sites, lodgings, campsites, aviation museums, and other destinations.  Other content available for members; membership is free.
AVweb
A pretty good web aviation magazine.  It is updated as the articles come in, daily for some sections.  It is however starting to use annoying scrolling text and other distracting "features" of web publishing, and it requires (free) registration.  Still well worth reading.
GPSFlightTracker
ATC Radar running over google maps and satellite photos.
Acme mapper
Type in latitude and longitude, and this google map app tells you where it is, overlaying it on your choice of map, aerial photo, NEXRAD display, or other things.  Mongo cool, and a good way to check where intersections really are for flight checking GPS.  Actually, plain old google maps will do it too, (just type in coordinates) but this offers other backdrops.
New England Pilots Group
A web based "let's get together and maybe fly" group, hosted by meetup.com.  I found this at a safety seminar at HPN; I haven't tried it but it looks interesting.
rentplanes.com
Search for planes to rent when you are away from ours, such as on vacation.  The web site also claims to list FBOs, flight schools, and flying clubs, but I don't see an easy way to do that, outside of simply looking for planes.
Flying 20 Club store Direct external link to the Flying 20 club store, operated by Corporate Casuals.  Only the gateway page is on our site; the direct link is not.

US-Radar
Hi Res radar loop of the entire US, from srh.noaa.gov.
TWC radar
Near-live radar and radar forecasts from The Weather Channel (Danbury CT at this link).  The interactive part requires flash and displays the radar and clouds over aerial photos.  You can drag the image (center what you want under the crosshairs) and then zoom in.  Site contains popup ads.
Radar color key
A comparative color key for several different radar sources.
Northeast Leaf color and drop map A map of the Northeast's fall foliage colors and another of leaf drop, from foliagenetwork.com.  Other areas and past archives available too.
Northeast Leaf Peeping map
A map of the Northeast's fall foliage colors, from weather.com.  Other areas, past archives, and more inside.
Lightning theory and detection
A PDF file with a fascinating explanation of how lighning works and how it is detected via instrumentation.

Trick-click: (back to top) Clicking a link normally takes you to the site.  You have other options however, depending on your system.  On most systems that allow right-clicking, doing so brings up a menu of options.  On systems that don't (such as some Macs) trick-click by holding down the squiggle, apple, control, or shift key (depending on browser) while clicking.

You can view and print any of the above PDF (Portable Document Files) using the Adobe PDF Reader. If you don't have the Adobe PDF Reader on your computer system, you can obtain a free copy from Adobe by clicking on the icon below or the following link: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
